Asahi India Glass cooperated with the Vishakha Group headquartered in Ahmedabad to build India's largest solar glass factory in Mundra, Gujarat, India. The plant is a newly built project, with an initial manufacturing capacity of up to 3GW of solar installations per year.

The plant is expected to start production within 18-24 months. AIS will hold a minority stake in the solar glass business. Vishakha Group is one of the largest flexible polymer packaging manufacturers in India. It also produces other key components in the entire solar panel value chain, including solar backsheets, EVA encapsulation panels and aluminum frames for solar modules. Asahi India Glass became the second company to enter the field of solar glass manufacturing in 2021 after Gold Plus Glass Industry headquartered in New Delhi.

The solar glass market has a bright future

Currently, Borosil Renewables is the only solar glass manufacturer in the country. It has a factory in Bharuch, Gujarat, which can meet about 40% of India's solar glass demand. Imports meet demand balance. With the increase in sales, it also expanded its production capacity from 450 tons per day to 950 tons per day by adding a third solar glass production line and processing facilities of 500 tons per day.

As the increase in production capacity is announced, the surge in solar installations in India is driving huge demand for solar equipment/panels and solar glass. India has now set an ambitious goal of generating 450 gigawatts of renewable energy by 2030. Sanjay Labroo, Managing Director and CEO of Asahi India Glass Ltd (AIS), said: "Although it is a different market segment, solar glass is still an adjacent business of AIS's existing business. We are very happy to work with Vishakha Group. They The vision is to create an entire ecosystem and value chain for India’s indigenous solar power generation."

Jigish Doshi, Chairman of the Vishakha Group, said: “India is one of the few countries that has accelerated global climate change commitments. We intend to do our part to achieve our renewable energy goals. Solar glass The manufacturing joint venture will support the Indian government’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative, which will help achieve energy independence and create a large number of jobs in Gujarat... We plan to supplement AIS’s technical expertise and experience from others in our entire solar value chain through synergy. business".
