According to Jiandao.com, the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity signed a contract with the State-owned Power Construction Corporation of China (China Power) on August 25, 2021 to build the first solar power plant with an installed capacity of 2000 MW.
Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Kadimi wrote on his blog that this is one of the first projects of this kind in Iraq and will provide clean and renewable energy to the system. The first nuclear power plant has an installed capacity of 750 megawatts, and Iraq will add more plants until it reaches the target of 2,000 megawatts. Iraq is the second largest oil producer among OPEC members, but it imports electricity from Iran.
Iraq has been exploring ways to reduce its dependence on energy imports, especially after the United States is under increasing pressure to relax relations with Tehran. The US State Department again approved sanctions exemptions in early August 2021, allowing Iraq to import Iranian electricity before the end of 2021 because Iraq is struggling with frequent power outages and lack of domestic power generation capacity.

The Iraqi Prime Minister has previously stated that he would like to see Iraq use solar power to generate electricity. Iraqi Oil Minister Ihsan Ismail earlier told Asalq that Iraq will award solar power projects by 2025 to produce 10,000 to 12,000 megawatts of electricity, accounting for about 25% of its electricity needs.
