DNV's energy transition outlook states that the scale of electrification is expected to double within one generation, and renewable energy has become the most competitive new energy source. However, forecasts show that by 2030, global emissions will only be reduced by 9%, when the 1.5˚C carbon budget agreed by the global economy will be emptied.

The COP21 Paris Agreement aims to control global warming to "far below 2°C" and work hard to limit it to 1.5°C. DNV has been predicting a rapid transition to a decarbonized energy system by the middle of this century. Despite the rapid change, DNV predicts that despite all efforts, the world is still not enough to realize the ambitions of the Paris Agreement, and warns that by the end of 2021, the earth is likely to reach 2.3˚C. global warming.

DNV CEO Remi Eriksen said: "We have seen governments around the world take extraordinary measures to control the impact of the pandemic and stimulate recovery. However, I am deeply concerned about the needs of governments. How to apply their determination and urgency in the face of the pandemic to our climate. We must now see the same sense of urgency to avoid climate catastrophe."

He added: “Many pandemic recovery plans focus mainly on protecting rather than transforming existing industries. A lot of reconstruction is better than building. Although this is a lost opportunity, it is not our faster transition to deep decarbonization. The last time in the energy system."

The report is now in its fifth year and was released two months before COP26 is held in Glasgow. It also emphasizes that the global pandemic is a “lost opportunity” to accelerate the energy transition, as the Covid-19 recovery plan focuses mainly on protection rather than Transform existing industries.Editor/XuNing
