The President of the Republic, Sebastián Piñera, led the official start of the Santiago-Melipilia train.

"The project is a concrete and effective contribution to connect all residents in the southwestern part of the metropolitan area and help achieve a greater degree of urban and social integration, which will translate into a fairer and more inclusive city and improve the betterment of everyone. Quality of life." The president announced.

The new rail service with a total investment of US$1.554 billion will be put into operation in 2026, benefiting more than 50 million passengers each year and shortening the travel time of residents. This means that for people who travel between San Diego and Melipira every day, they can recover up to 22 days a year.

There are eight communes that benefit from this part. Of these communes, five are not part of the transportation system, so the project will become a gateway to the RED system. The project considers setting up 11 stations within a 61-kilometer section, of which there are 3 lanes to Malloco (two passengers, one cargo) and two lanes to Melipilla (one passenger, one cargo), and Connection of Line 1 and Line 6. It will have 22 state-of-the-art electric trains, 15 uneven vehicle intersections, 49 uneven pedestrian connections, 12 automatic level crossings, a workshop and garage, fully enclosed road belts, and installation of new signals , Communications and power systems.

The project was born to respond to the needs of the southwestern metropolitan area and provide an alternative to public transportation to reduce their travel time and costs. In addition, the beneficiaries can get better services. Considering that one passenger train replaces 8 passenger buses and 480 cars, this will clear the streets and avenues. In addition, the new service will be the largest in EFE, and the number of passengers transported each year will double.

The President emphasized that the project is part of the Chilean Railway Plan, which aims to pass a long-term investment plan of more than 5.5 billion U.S. dollars to restore trains for the development of Chile and the quality of life of Chileans, mainly on commuter trains.
