Turkey has rapidly developed into a major market for wind energy. The country recently celebrated an important milestone: it reached a cumulative wind energy capacity of 10,000 megawatts. Turkey has a vast territory and excellent wind speed, which provides ideal conditions for wind energy production. In the past decade, the country has developed a strong wind energy supply chain.

Turkey's installed wind energy capacity reached 10 GW, which is a major achievement for the country. This means that Turkey has managed to increase its wind energy capacity tenfold in the past 10 years.

During this period, Turkey’s energy structure has diversified, especially through the expansion of renewable energy power generation capacity. Turkey’s power structure is rapidly shifting to renewable energy, which currently accounts for 43% of total power generation, while coal and natural gas account for 34% and 23%, respectively. Today, wind energy accounts for 10% of Turkey's electricity structure, making it the second largest source of renewable energy after hydropower. All 10GW installed in Turkey today is onshore wind power. The 10 GW milestone is far from the end of onshore wind energy development in Turkey. The country’s goal is to add 20 gigawatts of wind energy by 2030. Most of this will continue to come from onshore wind energy.

Except for Istanbul, most areas with high wind power generation are in the Aegean region. Izmir Province is a leader in wind energy deployment, with approximately 20% of the country's wind energy capacity. The largest wind energy project, the 312MW Soma project, is located in the provinces of Manisa and Barricksier.

The success of the Turkish wind power industry is rooted in its expanding and strong domestic supply chain. Many European and international companies have also established production facilities in Turkey. The latest data show that there are 3580 companies in the wind energy sector in Turkey, directly or indirectly employing 25,000 people. The country has production facilities of market-leading companies such as TPI Composites, Enercon, and GRI Renewables. For example, the American company TPI Composites produces high-quality composite materials for wind turbine blades at two factories in the Izmir region, with a total of approximately 4,200 employees. From there, they mainly serve customers in Europe, including the Turkish local market, the Middle East and Africa.

WindEurope's financial and investment trends show that Turkey will rank among the top five in Europe with 1.6 billion euros in new wind energy investment in 2020. Turkey is also the fifth largest equipment manufacturer in Europe in 2020. Today, 77 wind turbine equipment manufacturers have production facilities in Turkey and export to 45 countries on six continents.

So far, all 10 GW of wind energy installed in Turkey is onshore. But the country is now also turning to the possibility of developing offshore wind power. The Izmir Development Agency’s roadmap to promote offshore wind power development estimates that Turkey’s total offshore wind power potential is 70 GW.

The industry is still waiting for specific offshore wind power legislation. But the Turkish offshore wind power industry is taking shape. The recently established Turkish Offshore Wind Power Association joined WindEurope to learn from the success stories of European offshore wind power.Editor/Baohongying
