The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority will publish a hydrogen strategy in 2022 because the UAE will invest in clean fuels as part of its energy transition efforts. The company is currently conducting a 50 million German dirham hydrogen pilot project with Germany's Siemens Energy.

"We have studied the pros and cons. However, the current price is very positive. We put forward the terms of reference to promote the hydrogen strategy. It may take a year to complete this strategy, but I think hydrogen will compete in the future." Director of Deva Corporation Said Taye, general manager. This 300-kilowatt green hydrogen power plant is being developed at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, where the largest solar power plant in the UAE is located.

The pilot projects being developed by Deva, Expo 2020 and Siemens Energy are aimed at demonstrating how to use solar energy to produce hydrogen and how to store and re-electrify clean fuels. Green hydrogen is produced through an electrolysis process, which can be powered by energy from the sun, wind or other renewable energy sources. Taye said that Deva is also studying the use of hydrogen in transportation, especially in public transportation.

The UAE plans to provide hydrogen-powered transportation locally as part of a broader roadmap to explore the potential of fuels, which has become an important part of the regional energy diversification strategy. Dubai is the country's trade center, and it is planned that nearly three-quarters of its energy demand will come from clean energy by 2050. As part of the 2030 Green Transport Initiative, the Emirate is also increasing the use of sustainable transport.

At the same time, Abu Dhabi's renewable energy company Masdar is advancing the development of hydrogen demonstration projects as part of the alliance. The design of the project is expected to be completed by the end of this year. The company has begun to evaluate its green hydrogen demonstration project, which will find the use of fuel cells in carbon-neutral buses in Masdar City and in aviation fuel used by Etihad and Lufthansa.
