The Ethiopian Power Company plans to build 71 power projects in the next ten years, with a total of more than 40 billion U.S. dollars. Ashber Balchar, CEO of Ethiopian Electric Power Company, said that the funds for the above-mentioned projects come from the Ethiopian government and electric power companies, the African Development Bank, the World Bank and other development partners, including 16 hydropower projects and 24 wind power projects. Projects, 17 geothermal projects and 14 solar power projects.

It is reported that Saudi Arabia’s Aqua Power Company plans to build two solar power projects and is preparing for construction. Ethiopian Electronics is negotiating with the UAE Amir Company (Amia) on the first phase of the Aisha wind power project, and other wind power projects are in the process of tendering.

In addition, private developers have also begun construction of Tulu Moye and Corbetti geothermal energy projects.

At present, hydropower accounts for more than 90% of Ethiopia’s national power generation capacity, but its hydropower resources are unevenly distributed in space and time. Although Ethiopia exports electricity to neighboring countries every year, there is still a shortage of electricity during the dry season, and it also needs to import electricity from neighboring countries. In addition, hydropower generation is extremely vulnerable to extreme weather changes. Therefore, although hydropower provides cheap power, excessive reliance on hydropower is bound to cause seasonal instability of its power supply.

Electricity exports are a stable growth point for Ethiopia’s export earnings. Guided by power exports, a nationwide network of 400kV voltage levels will be gradually formed, which can mutually adjust the output of various large hydropower stations and establish itself as a hub in the East African power network. It is foreseeable that the nationwide backbone power grid and dispatch automation projects will be the hot spot for investment in the future. Editor/Xu Shengpeng
