Electronic fuel (also known as e-gasoline) is regarded as the savior of internal combustion engines in the climate crisis and is made of synthetic methanol. Proponents say that when burned, it emits 90% less carbon dioxide (CO2) than fossil fuels.

The Haru Oni project is located in Cabo Negro and is developed by an international consortium including Porsche, Italian energy company Enel, Siemens Energy, Chinese energy company AME and Chilean oil company ENAP. Porsche and Siemens said that by the end of 2022, the pilot product will produce about 130,000 liters of electronic fuel. In two further stages, by 2024, production capacity will be substantially increased to approximately 55 million liters, and by 2026 to approximately 550 million liters.

The purpose is to connect the 1.25MW electrolyzer to the 3.4MW turbine. In the first step, the electrolyzer splits water into oxygen and hydrogen. The carbon dioxide is then filtered from the air and combined with green hydrogen to produce synthetic methanol, which is then converted into electronic fuel. Armin Schnettler, vice president of Siemens Energy, said in a press statement: "With Haru Oni, we will bring our power-to-X technology to the global market. We are jointly developing and implementing the world's first production A large-scale integrated commercial plant for synthetic, climate-neutral fuels."

Michael Steiner, a member of the Porsche board responsible for research and development, added that the plant is a manifestation of Porsche's pioneering spirit. "In terms of renewable fuels, we also see ourselves as a pioneer, and we want to promote development. This is in line with our clear overall sustainable development strategy. This means that Porsche as a whole can achieve net carbon neutrality as early as 2030."
