On September 15, the Portuguese utility group announced plans to invest more than 550 million euros (649.7 million US dollars) to transform its Los Barrios coal-fired power plant in the province of Cadiz and build a green hydrogen production facility in southern Spain.

These plans were announced by the Los Barrios City Hall on Tuesday, after the town’s mayor Miguel Alconchel held a working meeting with EDP officials to discuss the transformation of the factory and its surroundings to create The so-called Hydrogen Valley of Gibraltar. Bay.

The 570 MW Los Barrios plant is currently shutting down and has been approved by the Spanish government in March 2021 to start the process. Its operator, Viesgo Produccion SL, which is part of the EDP Group, will close the plant within one year after the resolution in March and then dismantle it for up to four years.

Coal-fired power plants will be replaced by green hydrogen production facilities, some unspecified renewable energy and energy storage. The city government mentioned that the renovation project is considering installing a 255-megawatt lithium-ion battery storage system on site. The overall goal is to supply green hydrogen to the industrial sector near Campo, Gibraltar, and export it by sea in the future. "This will be a pioneering project that will place Los Barrios at the forefront of ecological transformation." Mayor Alconchel said of the initiative. In Asturias, EDP has two plants marked as closed, and the company will seek to invest up to 470 million euros to install renewable energy and build infrastructure for the production of green hydrogen.

As the Galicia region gets rid of coal power generation, it will receive more funds in the next ten years-more than 1 billion euros. EDP does not operate coal-fired power plants in the region, but is willing to invest in new wind farms and green hydrogen energy programs in the region to help revitalize the regions affected by decarbonization.Editor/Baohongying
