According to EnergyPress, transmission system operators in Greece and Egypt are interested in installing submarine cables between Europe and Africa. As many other bilateral efforts are underway, the two companies compete fiercely.

The news media quoted an unnamed source as saying that independent transmission operators (Admie or IPTO), the Greek TSO, are preparing to reach a memorandum of understanding with their Egyptian counterpart EETC on a 2GW subsea interconnector. The idea behind establishing a link between the two continents is to send renewable electricity from North Africa to the European continent, where North Africa will build important green energy production capacity. From the entry point, it can be transmitted to Central and Western Europe through existing and planned infrastructure.

Greece is increasing its high-voltage interconnection capabilities with Bulgaria. It also cooperated with Italy to establish a submarine cable link with an existing capacity of 500MW on a 1GW submarine cable link under the Ionian Sea. It was built in 2001. The report added that private partners can participate in the project with Egypt. Admie is studying what is the best route: to Crete, Peloponnese and even Attica.

Greece is already part of the EuroAfrica Interconnector project. The plan is to connect the mainland with Cyprus and Egypt through Crete. Another envisaged corridor is the Eurasian interconnection, which should pass from Israel through Cyprus to Crete and then to mainland Greece. Admie has installed a cable from the Peloponnese to Crete. The other line should be completed in 2022. Another interconnection project is under development to connect the island to Attica, where Athens is located. This will be part of the interconnector to Israel and Egypt. The European Union approved a 100 million euro grant for Eurasian interconnection in July 2021.

Elsewhere, Italy and Tunisia are preparing to establish a 600-megawatt link under the Strait of Sicily. The EU has given TUNITA (also known as Elmed Mediterranean) Community Benefit Project or PCI status, just like the Eurasian Interconnection Project. Algeria is considering the possibility of establishing links with Italy (via Sardinia) and Spain. Spain intends to install a submarine cable to Morocco on the basis of two existing submarine cables, with a total capacity of 1.4 GW. This African country is also carrying out similar bilateral projects with Portugal.

UK-based Xlinx said in April that it hopes to drive four submarine high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cables all the way to Morocco. The estimated capacity is 3.6 GW. This will be the longest submarine interconnection in the world.Editor/XuNing
