After 70 years of ups and downs, China's nuclear power technology has been in a world-class position. The nuclear power field was once one of the highlights of China-UK economic and trade cooperation, but related projects may face variables. The British "Guardian" reported on September 25, 2021 that the British government is close to reaching an agreement that may cause China to abandon its participation in a new nuclear power plant project on the Suffolk coast in southeastern England. If the news is true, it means that the British government will undermine the nuclear power construction agreement signed with China General Nuclear Power Group.

In September 2016, CGN signed a package agreement with EDF and the British government for new nuclear power projects in the United Kingdom, including Hinkley Point C, Sideswell C, and Bradwell B. However, the "Guardian" stated that the British government tried to get China General Nuclear Power to withdraw from the Sideswell C, which is worth about 20 billion pounds, and instead inject British taxpayer taxes as an investment replacement. At present, China General Nuclear Power holds 20% of the shares in the C project of Sideswell. Reuters quoted a British government spokesperson's response on the 26th, saying, "Negotiations are ongoing and a final decision has not yet been made."

The Guardian analyzed that the shift of the British government is closely related to the United States, and Washington has always hoped that London will remove China from the British nuclear power program. In August 2019, the United States announced that China General Nuclear Power was included in the "Entity List" under the usual excuse of "worrying about national security." Former US Secretary of State Pompeo urged Britain in 2020 to choose a position in the battle to develop nuclear technology.

The British move is undoubtedly an unbelievable, typical representative of crossing the river to demolish the bridge. Earlier, the spokesperson of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded to the “Britain is discussing the removal of China General Nuclear Power Group from future projects” and stated that China and the UK are important trade and investment partners for each other and are pragmatic based on the principles of mutual benefit and win-win cooperation. Cooperation is in the interests of both parties. The British side should effectively provide Chinese companies with an open, fair and non-discriminatory business environment. Editor/Sang Xiaomei
