The French Electric Power Company (EDF) has proposed to build four to six EPR reactors at two to three sites in Poland, with a total capacity of 6.6-9.9GW.

EDF has submitted a non-binding preliminary quotation to the Polish government in this regard. The quotation is a supply contract for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) activities of the nuclear reactor. According to EDF, the initial quotation includes all major parameters, including plant configuration, industrial solutions, plans for the development of the local supply chain, as well as cost estimates and timetables.

The proposal aims to help Poland achieve the goals set in the Polish Nuclear Power Plan (PPEJ) approved by the Polish government in October 2020. In addition, EDF stated that the purpose of its proposal is to establish the principles of the Poland-France strategic partnership framework to support Poland's energy transition plan, in line with Europe's carbon neutrality goals.

The French company claims that the EPR-based nuclear program will bring many advantages to the Polish economy. It will contribute to Poland's energy independence by promoting power generation for at least 60 years.

Together, EDF's EPR reactors can meet up to 40% of Poland's current electricity demand. In addition, the EPR-based nuclear program will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 55 million tons per year through new reactors, which greatly contributes to Poland's net-zero strategy. The French company estimates that during the construction phase, each EPR twin will create nearly 25,000 local jobs and tens of thousands of indirect jobs. The company stated: “In the spirit of the long-term European partnership between the Polish and French nuclear industries, the program will benefit from significant synergy with other EPR projects in Europe.” “With the full support of the French government, EDF Since the establishment of the Polish nuclear power program, it has been committed to cooperating with the Polish nuclear power program.” In September, it was reported that EDF and General Electric (GE) had preliminary discussions on the possible acquisition of GE Steam Power’s nuclear business in France.Editor/Baohongying
