The non-centralized distribution of natural gas in China increases the difficulty of mining and transportation

As a major energy consuming country in the world, China is not very rich in natural gas reserves, and the distribution is not concentrated. Natural gas resources are more abundant in the western region, but consumption is less. The eastern region has high consumption, but not many reserves.

In order to rationally deploy natural gas resources, China began to build underground natural gas storage facilities in the 1970s. The main purpose of building a gas storage is to ensure a stable supply of natural gas. Unlike petroleum and coal, natural gas can be stored there without being exploited. Once the natural gas is mined, it will leak out continuously, and if it is not stored in time, it will be wasted.

Although the West-East Gas Pipeline has increased the rate of consumption of natural gas resources in the west, gas consumption has not changed steadily. In the peak period of gas consumption, if the supply is insufficient, there will be insufficient supply. During periods of low gas consumption, the output of natural gas will exceed market demand. China's gas storage technology started late, but after decades of development, related technologies have reached the international leading level.

China invests 7 billion to build a natural gas storage depot in the desert

The development and utilization of natural gas is also a type of infrastructure project. In infrastructure construction, China is already at the forefront of the world. In 2020, the state will invest nearly 7 billion in the west to build the first underground gas storage group, which is of great significance for the development and utilization of natural gas resources in the west.

According to relevant data, China's conventional natural gas reserves are 38.4 trillion cubic meters, and the recoverable natural gas reserves are about 13.2 trillion cubic meters. Although the total amount is not very large in the world, it is enough to meet the natural gas demand for a period of time. The natural gas reserves are sufficient, but the actual amount of exploitation and use only ranks 19th in the world. The development and utilization of natural gas has the problem of inconsistency and incompleteness, which is actually restricted by the distribution range of natural gas resources.

Natural gas resources account for 60% to 70% in the central and western regions, and the extracted natural gas cannot be transported to the eastern gas demand areas in time. In fact, before that, China had built 27 underground gas storages, which already had the ability to adjust peak gas consumption. The underground gas storage group constructed in 2020 is converted from 3 depleted gas reservoirs, capable of storing 5.6 billion cubic meters of gas, and is expected to be completed and put into operation in 2025.

China's natural gas exploration and development has maintained a relatively rapid growth rate every year. With the continuous discovery of gas storage fields with reserves of more than 100 billion cubic meters, the exploitation of natural gas has become an important part of the energy supply structure.

The exploitation and use of natural gas is an important step to promote the transformation of the energy structure

From another perspective, natural gas is a fossil energy with higher burning efficiency. Although storage and transportation are troublesome, compared with the slower rate of regeneration of petroleum and coal resources, some reserves can be restored after a period of time after the extraction of natural gas, and its use time is longer than that of petroleum and coal.

Even if fossil energy will exacerbate global warming, if natural gas is used as the main energy supply, it will not cause greater pollution. Before new energy becomes the main energy source, natural gas will be an important transitional energy source. In fact, the seabed combustible ice reserves are large. If these natural gas resources can be fully utilized, then the dilemma of the gradual scarcity of fossil energy facing mankind will be alleviated.

Regardless of whether it is mining natural gas on land or mining and using combustible ice on the seabed, gas storage technology is accompanied by it.
