Austria has started the expansion project of the Marchtrenk-Wels railway section on the western line. According to the OBB2022-2027 framework plan, the cost of the project is 277 million euros and is funded by OBB-Infrastruktur, Upper Austria and EU funds. The project was selected under the 2.1 billion euro investment plan announced in January, which included a 265 million euro budget for the Upper Austria railway project.

Austrian railway project construction

After the construction project, the section will benefit from four tracks instead of two, thereby increasing the capacity of the heavily used western railway route. OBB-Infrastruktur CEO Franz Bauer said at the ceremony, “The third track will be put into operation in early 2026, and the fourth track will be put into use in 2027. “In six years, we will create much-needed capabilities to promote Road to rail transition. "

According to the project, the two old railway bridges on the A25 highway will be replaced by three new bridges equipped with modern noise protection devices. Marchtrenk train station will enter the basic modernization plan, which includes the construction of a new platform with raised platform edges to ensure that passengers can board local trains comfortably and without obstacles. An elevator will be installed to provide passengers with access to the platform, and the existing park-and-ride facilities will add 22 parking spaces and 40 bicycles.

Herbert Kasser, the head of the Second Directorate General of the Austrian Government, said: “With the four-track expansion of the Marchtrenk-Wels railway section, increasing the capacity of trains increases more frequent passenger traffic, and provides a better way for railway freight traffic to shift from road to railway. Passengers and companies benefit from it, and we will move further towards climate neutrality in 2040. "Keywords: engineering construction, engineering news
