On December 8, 2021, the construction of the container terminal in the east operation area of the Yantian Port Area of Shenzhen Port officially started. This means that the construction of an automated terminal in the east operation area of Yantian Port has officially started, and it also marks a crucial step taken by Shenzhen to build a port-type national logistics hub.

Annual throughput of 3 million TEUs

It is understood that the Yantian Port East Operation Area project includes four sub-projects, namely the first-phase project, the connection channel project, the supporting project, and the support system project. The total investment of the project is estimated to be approximately 14.49 billion yuan. The first phase of the project will build three new 200,000-ton-class automated container berths, with a coastline of 1470 meters, a water depth of -18.0 meters at the front of the terminal, a total land area of 1.2 million m2, and a designed annual handling capacity of 3 million TEUs.

To meet the overall management needs of Yantian Port, the project will construct a 2.1km long cross-sea communication channel connecting the east operation area and the Zhonggang area. In addition, the long-term planning and construction of the Shugang Railway in the East Operation Area can seamlessly connect with the Shenzhen short-distance inland port railway line, and realize the coordinated dispatch of multiple processes such as ships, horizontal transportation in the port, and yard operations.

At the same time, the east operation area will vigorously promote the construction of digital terminals, and take the construction of automated terminals as an opportunity to promote the construction of network security systems, cloud service data centers, cloud disaster recovery systems, and 5G infrastructure to provide support for the construction of smart ports; in On this basis, promote the deep integration of 5G communication, Beidou system, blockchain, big data, artificial intelligence, Internet and port business, realize smart interconnection, smart decision-making, smart operation, smart port, smart logistics and smart service, and operate east The district will be built into the world's best and world-class smart green container terminal.

Promote the development of the ocean center city

The port is an important fulcrum for Shenzhen to participate in and promote the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and enhance the city's modern service functions. It is also an important strategic resource for Yantian District to build the core area of a global ocean center city.

It is understood that Yantian Port has natural deep-water berth conditions and super-large ship service capabilities. It is one of the world's largest single-handle container terminals and the preferred port for 200,000-ton ultra-large container ships in South China. It is responsible for the Shenzhen Port. /2 container throughput, 1/3 of the province’s foreign trade import and export volume, and 1/4 of the country’s trade with the United States. As of November this year, the container throughput of the Yantian Port Area was 12.7972 million TEUs, a year-on-year increase of 5.62%.

According to the relevant person in charge of the Yantian Port Group, the construction of the east operation area project will further enhance the service capacity of the Yantian Port Area for multiple super-large ships to berth at the same time in the future, improve the service level, and further expand the container terminal of the Yantian Port Area. The scale of operations meets the ever-increasing demand for container throughput in the Pearl River Delta region and even southern China, further increases the density of routes, enhances the comprehensive service capabilities of the modern shipping industry, and consolidates the status of Yantian Port as a major hub port in South China and Shenzhen Port as a global container trunk port.
