Nexsphere plans to build an offshore wind farm with a capacity between 500 MW and 1,000 MW in the Bass Strait near Tasmania. The project is planned to be constructed in phases and will be launched in 2026.
Wind farm on Bass Strait
The Tasmanian Liberal government welcomed Nexsphere’s statement. Tasmania already has 100% of its electricity demand from renewable energy sources and has legislated to increase it to 200% by 2040. The Tasmanian government stated that the Bass Strait has been identified by the National Blue Economic Cooperation Research Center as one of the best options for offshore wind power generation in the country.

These projects also complement the national battery project Marinus and the country's plan to provide renewable energy for the emerging green hydrogen industry in the Bell Bay Advanced Manufacturing Zone. The government stated that offshore wind energy as a renewable energy source is booming around the world. The International Energy Agency regards offshore wind energy together with solar energy and onshore wind energy as one of the three clean energy sources. Bass Strait was found to have higher wind speeds at 50 kilometers and 100 kilometers offshore than other locations, second only to the 25 kilometers offshore location in Portland, Victoria.
