Serbia plans to rebuild and modernize about 300 kilometers of railways in 2022, compared to 450 kilometers in 2021. Serbian Railway Infrastructure said it has started modernizing sections of the 108-kilometer Novi Sad-Subotica-Novi Sad-Subotica-Kelebiha line. New underpasses are being built in Novi Sad and the station is being rebuilt. The reconstruction of the entire Novi Sad-Kelebiha line will be completed by November 2024.

The modernisation of the 68.8km Jajinci-Mala Krishna line, which is part of the Trans-European Railway X corridor through Serbia, is currently in its final stages. Construction began in September on the 22.8 km Niš–Brestovac line, which is also part of the corridor between Nis and Presevo. Eight new reinforced concrete bridges are being constructed to replace existing bridges. When completed in June 2023, the revamped line will allow 120 km/h of operation.

As part of the 26.6 km Subotica-Khorgos line, the 3.6 km section between Horgos and Bakivinogradi has been rebuilt and preparations are underway since October 2021, to lay another 4.5 kilometers of line. The work is expected to be completed by the November deadline. The new line will be electrified and equipped with operating speeds of up to 120 km/h. The 75km rebuilt Belgrade-Novi Sad line will start commercial service in March, four years after construction began.

Bids are being evaluated for the construction of the Starak Dunis tunnel on the Belgrade-Nish line, while the tendering process for the modernization of the Nis-Dimitrovgrad line is underway. Documentation is also being prepared for the modernization and reconstruction of an additional 720 km of lines in the coming years. This includes Sićevo – Dimitrovgrad, bypassing Niš; Starach – Đunis; Valjevo – Vrbnica, connecting to Bar, Montenegro; Beli Potok – Vinča – Pancevo bypass; Resnik – Veliko Prana – Niš – Preshevo – Serbia-North Macedonia border; and Stara Pazova – Sid. In 2021, this includes 150 kilometers of regional lines, including 108 kilometers of Nis-Zajecar, 28.5 kilometers of Kumane-Banatsko Milosevo and 9.5 kilometers of NoviSad-Bogojevo.Editor/XingWentao
