Adnoc and Borealis build $6 billion polyolefin plant project in Ruwais

Abu Dhabi National Oil Company and Austrian chemical producer Borealis have begun construction of Borouge's fourth plant within the polyolefin production site in Ruwais. The plant will help boost the local supply chain to meet the expected growth in demand for polyolefins in the Middle East, Africa and Asia, while providing key feedstocks for the Taz'iz Chemicals industrial chemicals district in Ruwais.

Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the representative of the ruler of the Al Dhafra region, witnessed the groundbreaking ceremony of the facility along with dignitaries from the Abu Dhabi government and officials from Adnoc, Borouge and Borealis. Dr Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, Managing Director and Group CEO, said: "We continue to receive strong interest from international and local investors who want to work with us to develop and grow our Ruwais site. “Borouge 4 will strengthen our domestic supply chain while accelerating domestic value and promoting economic diversification in the UAE. Borouge 2 and 3 were commissioned in 2010 and 2014, increasing the annual production capacity of polyethylene and polypropylene to 2 million and 4.5 million tons, respectively. Borouge4 will increase the company's total polyolefin production to 6.4 million tons, making it the largest single-site polyolefin complex in the world.
