Brazilian mining giant Vale and the Brazilian state of Pará held an event on April 5, 2022 to celebrate the start of construction of the first Tecnored commercial operation plant in the city of Maraba, southeastern Pará state.
Vale issued a statement saying that the annual green pig iron production capacity of the new plant will initially reach 250,000 tons, and it may reach 500,000 tons in the future. The factory is scheduled to be put into operation in 2025, with an estimated investment of about 1.6 billion reais ($1 is about 4.66 reais). Tecnored is an innovative technology that reduces carbon emissions by up to 100% by using biomass instead of metallurgical coal to produce green pig iron, which Vale hopes will help decarbonize the steel industry.
Vale CEO Eduardo Bartolomeo said: “The start of construction of the Tecnored commercial operation is an important step in the transformation of the mining industry and will help the process chain to become increasingly sustainable. and the region where the project is located is of great significance, it will improve the competitiveness of the region and help the region achieve sustainable development.”
The Tecnored commercial chemical plant is located on the original site of the Carajas Pig Iron Factory in the industrial zone of Malabar. According to the project progress and engineering research, it is expected that 2,000 jobs will be created during the construction phase during the peak period of the project, and 400 direct and indirect jobs.
