Scottish Power has unveiled plans in 2021 to build a green hydrogen hub at the Port of Cromarty Bay in Scotland. The Scottish Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association (SHFCA) has revealed that some member companies have already started feasibility studies on the proposed project. The plan outlines how up to 15 new offshore wind farms will be developed in the region over the next few years, making Firth an ideal location for a substation that supplies power to onshore electrolysers. The electrolyzer will be co-located with the storage tank.

ScottishPower has announced a partnership with carbon reduction and removal company Storegga to establish a green hydrogen scheme in northern Inverness, Scotland, a move that will enable major businesses such as Diageo, Glenmorangie and others to tap into clean hydrogen. The company announced a partnership with Storegga to begin developing a green hydrogen production plant at the site. The first project will be the Cromarty hydrogen project. From 2024, the project will provide up to 20 tonnes of green hydrogen per day, with the potential to expand to 300 MW depending on customer demand. Green hydrogen will replace fossil fuel sources and be used in the heating process at distilleries under brands such as Diageo, Glenmorangie and Whyte & Mackay - all of which operate in the Cromarty region.

Given the industry's plans to achieve net-zero emissions and government support for hydrogen uptake in the sector, it has been proposed that the breweries will be among the first to receive green hydrogen supplies from the centre. Green hydrogen can also support local manufacturing, food production and other industrial heating applications. Barry Carruthers, head of hydrogen at Scottish Power, said: "This is a very exciting milestone in our ambition to support the growth of green hydrogen production across the country and the decarbonisation of heavy industry. We can now set out to turn what was on paper into something practical. Projects that will transform Highland's industry and bring about long-lasting, lasting change for businesses and communities. Scotland is targeting net-zero emissions by 2045, five years ahead of the UK as a whole. In a policy statement released at the time, Scottish Energy Minister Paul Wheelhouse said that "there is no single fuel or technology that can solve climate change", but hydrogen could be an important part of the country's net-zero energy mix".Editor/XingWentao
