On May 16, 1949, the Chinese People's Liberation Army Railway Corps was established based on the Northeast People's Liberation Army Railway Column.

The railway soldiers are a special branch of the Chinese People's Liberation Army. In the war of liberation, the railway soldiers built the railway wherever the field army hit. During the War of Resisting U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea, the railway soldiers used their lives and blood to build a steel transportation line that was indestructible and constantly bombed. In the socialist construction, the railway soldiers were praised by the people as the commando of the railway construction of the motherland.

In 2021, Kunming South Railway Station built by China Railway Construction won the Zhan Tianyou Award. Since then, Kunming South Railway Station has achieved the grand slam of Luban Award, Guoyou Gold Award, Zhan Tianyou Award, and Steel Structure Gold Award in the field of engineering construction
