On May 17, 2022, I learned from the Development and Reform Commission of the Tibet Autonomous Region that the state plans to electrify the Gera section of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway in late June 2022, with a total construction period of 3 years and an estimated total investment of 14.84 billion yuan, of which the Tibet section is 7.206 billion yuan.

Project Overview

The electrification reconstruction project of the Gera section of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway covers 1,136.338 kilometers of the main line of the Gera section of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, and the effective length of the arrival and departure lines of the remaining 32 stations except Lhasa Station has been extended to 850 meters. Renovation of facilities to meet the needs of EMU train stops.

The electrification reconstruction project of the Gera section of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway is a key project in the strategic planning of the southwest of the country. At present, one of the sub-projects of the project, the replacement of turnouts and the reconstruction of the signaling system of the Gera section of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway is under construction, supervision and bidding. After all the projects are completed, the transportation capacity and service quality of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway will be improved, the electrification of the regional road network will be promoted, the transportation cost will be reduced, and the operational safety, reliability and risk resistance of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway will be further improved.
