Electricity is an essential element for economic and social development. As we all know, the western region of China is rich in energy resources. In order to send large-scale and large-capacity clean electricity from the western region to the eastern region over a long distance, UHV DC transmission technology is an inevitable choice.
UHVDC refers to the voltage level of ±800kV and above. Compared with the ±500kV UHV transmission mode, UHV DC transmission technology has many advantages. First, the power transmission capacity has been greatly improved; the second is the low power transmission loss; the third is to make overall use of the environmental capacity to reduce the pressure on the ecological environment; the fourth is to save valuable land resources.
However, when we decided to build the ±800kV UHVDC power transmission project, we had just completed the first domestically designed ±500kV HVDC power transmission project, and many technologies were still immature. Internationally, the relevant technical fields are still blank, and some foreign experts even think that it is impossible for us to build such a project.
With the in-depth research, a series of world-class technical problems such as insulation characteristics, electromagnetic environment, equipment development, and test technology under extra-large current lie in front of us. A few years later, we finally completed the world's first ±800kV UHV DC transmission project - Yunguang UHV DC project. Relying on this project, we have mastered the core technology of UHVDC engineering system research and integration for the first time, and formed an autonomous overall solution for UHVDC engineering.
In the future, the development of China's UHV technology will also serve to build a new power system with new energy as the main body. To achieve more innovative breakthroughs under the new historical opportunities requires a large number of scientific and technological talents to persevere and sharpen their swords in ten years.
