The Swak Dam is the flagship project of the Kenyan government's 2030 vision and the largest integrated water conservancy project under construction in Kenya. After the dam is completed, it will bring huge economic benefits to the water supply, power supply and agricultural irrigation in the southeastern part of Kenya, and greatly ease the consumption of more than 3 million people in Konza Science and Technology City and the three counties of Kitui, Makueni and Macacos. In order to ensure the smooth completion of the plan, the project department further consolidated front-line responsibilities, and established a number of "construction responsibility groups" led by project team members and with on-site construction, quality inspection, safety, and equipment personnel as team members based on the actual situation on site. The material supply of the stockyard and the filling of the foundation pit are the focus of the work, the responsibility area is divided, the target tasks are clarified, and the on-site construction efficiency is improved.

"Team Tu, we are here!" At 6:30 in the morning, a loud voice resounded on the banks of the Asi River. At this time, the noisy construction site, the human voice accompanied by the roar of machinery, seemed more passionate. Tu Quantao, the leader of the Swack project machinery team, is the busiest member of the construction responsibility group, responsible for the operation and maintenance of the project's own 100 sets of equipment. Go out in a hurry at 5:00 every morning, check the equipment shift record, and arrange for the equipment to be buttered. At 6:30, the day's earthwork began on time.

In the second quarter, the Swak Dam Project Department exceeded the monthly construction output value target for consecutive months, and accelerated the progress of various key parts. In particular, the number of drilling rigs in the stockyard reaches 75,000 meters per month, and the output of various types of sand and gravel aggregates reaches 3,000 tons per day.

Kenya, located in southeastern Africa, has two rainy seasons a year—long rainy season and short rainy season, of which the long rainy season is from March to June. Every year from March to June, heavy rainfall that lasts for several weeks often causes the river to swell, seriously affecting the construction progress.

At the construction site, high-intensity ultraviolet rays for a while, and heavy rain for a while, interrupted the continuity of the spillway concrete construction that the project is focusing on. Ye Wenjun, the chief engineer of the project department, saw that the foundation surface, which had just been cleaned up with great effort, was full of mud under the "baptism" of the rainstorm and needed to be cleaned again. He was full of regrets, but he reorganized people to start cleaning.

In order to ensure the normal pouring of the concrete of the structure, Ye Wenjun led the project technicians to guard the warehouse site, from cleaning the foundation to the reinforcement of the reinforcement, from the sealing of the mold to the concrete storage, from the technical disclosure to the foreign engineers' answering questions. He and his team stayed together through thick and thin, sticking to the front line of construction day and night, formulating a careful pouring plan, and vying for time during the rainy season until each warehouse was closed. He dragged his tired figure back to the office and started a new job.

At the same time, in order to ensure the normal construction, the project department has made preparations for the pumping pump, generator, and fuel oil in advance to ensure that the pumping of the foundation pit will not be affected by the rainy season.

"Even affected by the rainy season, the daily filling strength of the Swak Dam project has reached 17,000 cubic meters, and the monthly concrete pouring strength has reached 6,500 cubic meters, which can well meet the site schedule requirements." Li Shan said.

Guaranteed quality

In order to allow the 3 million Kenyan residents to drink safe and reliable water and use a steady stream of comfort electricity, the Swak Dam Project Department has always adhered to the principle of "safety first, quality first", in order to create a safe construction site and build high-quality projects as the target.

The project department vigorously promotes the "three work" activities of the team, achieves "pre-class meeting, in-class inspection, and after-class summary", adheres to the pre-class safety meeting, implements the "three inspections and three handovers", informs each operation team of safety risks, and clearly defines the safety risks. Control measures to effectively promote the refinement of safety. The on-site acceptance strictly implements the "three-inspection system" system, that is, the team self-inspection, the re-inspection of the construction personnel of the project department, and the final inspection of the quality inspection department of the project department to ensure that each construction link is under control.

"Every team must fill in the homework form truthfully and standardly, and the project department will check it regularly, and include the filling in the monthly performance assessment and evaluation." Li Shan emphasized at the weekly meeting.

After entering the dry season construction, the construction site temperature is high, ensuring the quality of mass concrete pouring is the key. In order to ensure the concrete pouring quality of the spillway structure, the project department actively carried out technical research, and decided to adopt effective measures such as chiller cooling to reduce the temperature of the concrete outlet. After many tests, the temperature of the concrete outlet was controlled at 8℃~18℃ range to ensure the best temperature for concrete pouring and lay a good quality foundation for subsequent construction.

At present, it is the golden time for construction, and the builders of the China Energy Construction Gezhou Dam are still fighting at the Swak Dam site.
