"I will put a sign on the door: China Consultation Office, so that everyone knows that it is only through me that you can learn about the latest developments in China." In 1697, Sophie Charlotte, who would become Queen of Prussia, received it. wrote in a letter.

This letter comes from the famous German scholar Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. Because of his outstanding achievements in mathematics, philosophy, law and other fields, Leibniz was well-known in Europe and was hailed as an encyclopedic scholar by later generations.

Leibniz was also a well-known China hand in Europe at that time. His focus on China began in his youth and continued throughout his life. During the 17th and 18th centuries when he lived, a group of European missionaries went to China, and the West learned more about China.

In 1689, Leibniz raised 30 questions about China in his correspondence with the missionary Grimaldi in China, covering astronomy, geography, medicine, military, humanities and society, etc. Most of them were related to science and technology. .

"Leibniz's interest in China was broader and deeper. As a great scholar full of genuine curiosity and open-mindedness, science was Leibniz's passion. He paid special attention to the exchange of knowledge and technology between the West and China, even according to A travel report on China, the invention of a horizontal-axis windmill inspired by Chinese technology for silver mining," Walldorf said.

"China and Europe represent the two peaks of human culture. If China and the West strengthen cooperation and cultural exchanges, a perfect and harmonious world can be achieved." Leibniz wrote in the book.

Today, the school has about 1,300 teachers and students from China, which reflects the spirit of inclusive freedom, open science and mutual respect that Leibniz pursued.Editor/Ma Xue
