On the morning of September 7, 2022, the Haitai Yangtze River Tunnel, known as the "First Tunnel of the Yangtze River in Ten Thousand Miles", officially started construction. According to the "Layout Plan of the Yangtze River Trunk Line Crossing the River Channel (2020-2035)" issued by the National Development and Reform Commission, the Haijiang River Crossing Channel is the key road-rail composite river crossing channel to be built before 2025.

The project starts from the Shanghai-Shaanxi Expressway in Haimen District, Nantong City, and ends at the Shanghai-Wuzhou Expressway in Taicang City, Suzhou, with a total length of about 39.2km. Section) is about 12.2km long, and the total investment of the project is estimated to be about 34.301 billion yuan.

The whole line adopts the standard construction of two-way six-lane expressway, with 5 interchanges and 1 service area.
