The Indian government has approved a second round of production-linked incentives to incentivize domestic solar PV module manufacturing. The plan is expected to add 65GW of fully and partially integrated solar PV module manufacturing capacity, which will bring in nearly $11.59 billion in direct investment.
Selected manufacturers will receive a five-year PLI, while the program is expected to create manufacturing capacity for materials such as EVA, solar glass and backsheets. The program is expected to create 195,000 direct jobs and 780,000 indirect jobs in solar manufacturing.
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy's PLI programme received $2.4 billion in new funding in February 2021, a big step up from its initial allocation of INR 45 billion to achieve gigawatt-scale high-efficiency solar PV modules Manufacturing capacity in India.
