Oman Energy Company OQ will build a 100 MW solar park in Oman's Block 60 concession, which is owned by Oman Oil Company Exploration and Production LLC. In its 2021 sustainability report, the energy giant said preparations for engineering, procurement and construction tenders were underway. A tender is planned to be launched in 2022.
Preliminary generation and transmission licence exemptions for self-generation have also been obtained from the Public Service Regulatory Authority, and the OQ AE division has received formal expressions of interest from several potential equity partners to invest in the Liwa Solar project, with a final investment decision expected in 2023 Finish.
The Block 60 concession area, also known as the Abu Tubul Block, is located in western central Oman, approximately 100 kilometers west of Saih Rawl, and covers an area of 1,485 square kilometers. The gas and oil extracted at the site is sent to the Abu Tupur gas processing plant operated by OOCEP. The park is owned by state-owned oil producer Oman Petroleum Development Company. Block 6 is the largest and most important oil and gas field in Oman, covering an area of nearly 91,000 square kilometers.
The Amin Solar IPP project has been successfully registered with the International Renewable Energy Certificate Standard Registry, which allows the plant's energy to be tracked and traced once it enters the grid, OQ said in a recent statement, International Renewables Energy certificates can link ownership of electricity from where it is produced to where it is consumed by issuing a certificate for every megawatt hour produced by a power plant.
