PetroChina Southwest Oil&Gas Company announced the discovery of new shale gas in Sichuan Basin, China. The new shale gas discovery is the result of drilling in the Jinshi 103HF exploration well. Jinshi 103HF has an expected resource capacity of 387.8 billion cubic meters, reaching 258600 cubic meters of natural gas production per day.

The Sichuan Basin gas field is composed of two main strata, Longmaxi and Qiongzhusi. Longmaxi Formation has been extensively explored and produced, while Qiongzhusi is expected to have the largest future exploration potential. This is the first discovery in Cambrian Qiongzhusi Formation since July 2022, and also the second discovery of shale gas in Sichuan Basin. Sinopec said in its statement that this breakthrough will provide a strong impetus for shale gas exploration and development from a single stratum to a new stratum and oilfield type, and help build a national natural gas reserve of 100 billion cubic meters in Sichuan Chongqing region.

Sinopec Southwest Wind Power has shifted from the traditional shale gas exploration to the black shale rich in organic matter, and established a new Cambrian shale evaluation standard.
