The Asian Development Bank and Cambodia Electric Power Corporation have signed a transaction consulting service authorization agreement, which plans to build a photovoltaic system with a total installed capacity of 2GW in Cambodia. Cambodia Electric Power Company will carry out a national study to determine the photovoltaic projects and energy storage projects to be installed by 2030.
The study will also identify deployment opportunities for undisclosed quantities of battery energy storage. With the increase of the share of photovoltaic systems installed in Cambodia, the supporting installation of battery energy storage system is expected to improve the stability of the power grid. Massimiliano Tropeano, a sustainable development expert of the European Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia, said that the most important thing for Cambodia Electric Power Company is the stability of the power grid. I think the company will install battery energy storage systems mainly for this purpose.

This study will first determine a 100MW pilot photovoltaic project to be built, financed and operated by the private sector. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will assist Cambodia Electric Power Company in bidding, and is expected to raise up to 100 million dollars of investment. The date of the tender has not been disclosed.
Cleo Kawawaki, Director of the Public Private Cooperation Office of the Asian Development Bank, said that the project would be Cambodia's most ambitious project in the field of renewable energy so far. It would use domestic resources to reduce power costs and improve energy security. We hope to contribute to this effort by supporting the carefully planned bidding pipeline to promote positive competition, optimize the efficiency, innovation and capital of the private sector, and benefit the Cambodian people. This authorization of ADB is based on its earlier support for Cambodia's photovoltaic industry. This includes supporting the country's first photovoltaic park in Kampong Khin Aung province, which will install a 100MW photovoltaic system. The Cambodian government is removing some obstacles to the installation of renewable energy.Editor/Xing Wentao
