Recently, the Bangladesh Karnaphuli River Tunnel Project, which was constructed and implemented by Chinese enterprises, held the completion ceremony of the southern tunnel. The tunnel is the first river tunnel in Bangladesh and the first underwater tunnel in South Asia.

"The Chinese side congratulates on the completion of the south line of the Karnaphuli River Tunnel." Zhao Lijian said that the Kanapuli River Tunnel Project is an important part of the Bangladesh China India Myanmar Economic Corridor. The completion of the southern tunnel of the project is another important achievement of China's joint construction of the the Belt and Road with neighboring countries, which is of great significance to improving local transportation, improving the Asian highway network, and promoting connectivity between Bangladesh and neighboring countries. After the completion of the tunnel, the driving distance from Chittagong Airport to the Industrial Park will be shortened from 4 hours to 20 minutes.

Zhao Lijian said that infrastructure is the cornerstone of connectivity and the priority area of the the Belt and Road construction. With the joint efforts of all parties, the infrastructure projects along the the Belt and Road have been implemented in an orderly manner. Since the opening of the Peleshac Bridge in Croatia in July 2022, more than 1 million vehicles have passed safely.
