On December 12, 2022, the Sichuan Provincial Development and Reform Commission issued the official reply on the approval of the Yalong River Lianghekou Hybrid Pumped Storage Power Station Project, agreeing to build the Lianghekou Hybrid Pumped Storage Power Station, which will become the first approved pumped storage power station in Sichuan Province.

The hydropower station relies on Lianghekou Hydropower Station reservoir as the upper reservoir and Yagen I Hydropower Station reservoir as the lower reservoir. Four reversible units with a single unit capacity of 300000 kilowatts are installed, with a total installed capacity of 1.2 million kilowatts and a total investment of about 8.75 billion yuan. The power station serves Sichuan power grid, and its development tasks are peak shaving, valley filling, energy storage, frequency modulation, emergency standby, and promoting the development and utilization of new energy.

The Yalong River Lianghekou Hybrid Pumped Storage Power Station is a key project in the National Medium and Long term Development Plan for Pumped Storage (2021-2035) and the Medium and Long term Development Plan for Pumped Storage in Sichuan Province.
