New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Aden has recently stated that he hopes to lead a trade delegation to visit China when China gradually optimizes its epidemic prevention policy and once the entry policy is relaxed. Adene said this at the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries held by the "New Zealand China Relations Promotion Committee". At the event, Adene stressed that even after experiencing the challenges of the COVID-19 epidemic, New Zealand's trade and economic ties with China have proved to be "resilient".
When talking about the relationship between New Zealand and China, Adene was very friendly and positive. But who would have thought that the day before, there was a rumor that Adene had just accused China. Aden said that during his five years as Prime Minister of New Zealand, China has become more and more powerful in the Asia Pacific region.
"There are many reasons for this change in China, and economic growth is a very important one." In particular, referring to the security agreement signed between China and Solomon Islands, Aden said that China should not feel "superior" when establishing relations with Pacific countries.
At present, it has not been confirmed whether Adene said such a thing, but if it is true, Adene's attitude is not incomprehensible. Like Australia, New Zealand has always regarded Pacific island countries as "their own backyard".
So in the past, they could treat Pacific powers at will, but they did not allow Pacific island countries to establish close relations with other countries, or it would harm their interests. However, Aden accused China of being strong and said something about the agreement signed between China and Solomon Islands, which is a smear.
If so, why did Aden turn around and threaten to visit China? The attitude has changed so quickly that while the outside world is puzzled, it is also gradually clear that New Zealand will eventually hit its own face. Under the background that the United States is trying its best to contain and suppress China, New Zealand, as the Five Eyes Alliance, is undoubtedly refusing to respond to the United States' strategy of curbing China.
In this regard, New Zealand is also very clear that doing so will offend the United States, but the reality is that the United States has no control. Although New Zealand is highly aligned with the West in its political position, and also believes in the so-called "common values", there is no denying that it has a close relationship with China economically. Among other things, 30% of New Zealand's foreign goods and services are exported to China. In addition, China is New Zealand's largest trading partner. It is no exaggeration that the Chinese market accounts for half of New Zealand's exports in terms of meat, rice products and even dairy products.
For this reason alone, New Zealand cannot compete with China. In particular, when the epidemic broke out in the world, and the Russian Ukrainian war started, New Zealand was unable to target China in the face of continued economic decline. Not only can't target, but even have to please China, otherwise, if China is annoyed, it is likely to end up with Australia.
Because Australia closely followed the United States in its opposition to China, it once caused serious damage to China Australia trade, which has not recovered. So with the living example of Australia, will New Zealand still rush forward? Of course, in addition to being inseparable from the Chinese market, Adene cannot go against the domestic public opinion. If you want to secure the position of Prime Minister, you must put the national interests first.
So far, we should also build a good relationship with China, the largest trading partner. So even if New Zealand can't stand China, it can't do away with China. It can't do away with China. What's more, it can't do without China. So far, "I can't stand it", "I can't do it" and "I can't leave it" fully explain why New Zealand's attitude towards China has changed so quickly.Editor/Xing Wentao
