In the face of the unjustified accusation by the United States and the West that China has brought a debt trap to Africa, Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said: China and Africa are good brothers who share the same breath and the same destiny, and both sides are moving forward side by side on the road of common development. China has always been committed to helping Africa alleviate debt pressure, actively participated in the G20 debt relief initiative, signed debt relief agreements or reached debt relief consensus with 19 African countries, and is the largest country in the G20 to implement debt relief.

Qin Gang said: China has also actively participated in the handling of individual debt cases in Chad, Ethiopia and Zambia under the G20 common framework. The World Bank's statistical report shows that in Africa's overall external debt, the debt held by multilateral financial institutions and commercial creditors accounts for nearly three quarters of the total debt of Africa, which is the largest debt of Africa. They can and should play a greater role in alleviating Africa's debt problems. China calls on all parties concerned to contribute to alleviating the debt pressure in Africa in accordance with the principle of joint action and fair burden.

Qin Gang stressed that the essence of Africa's debt problem is development. To solve Africa's debt problem, we should not only address the symptoms through debt treatment and other means, but also address the root causes and improve Africa's capacity for independent and sustainable development.
