Recently, Guangzhou's largest diameter shield machine, Avenue Pioneer, which was jointly built by Guangzhou Communications Investment Group and China Railway 14th Bureau in the Nanpu starting working shaft of Guangdong Haizhu Bay Tunnel Project, successfully started, marking that the Haizhu Bay Tunnel Project has entered the shield construction stage and the journey across the Pearl River has officially started. The Haizhu Bay Tunnel Project is expected to be completed and open to traffic by the end of 2024. At that time, the journey from Haizhu, Yuexiu and other central cities to Guangzhou South Railway Station is expected to be shortened to 15 minutes.

Avenue Xianfeng shield machine

"This shield machine has officially started its' journey across the river ', starting from Nanpu Island and crossing the river twice, passing through Sanzhi perfume Road and Pearl River Lijiao Waterway respectively, passing through Luoxi Island, and finally arriving at the receiving shaft in Nanzhou. The' journey 'is 2077m long, and the whole shield construction period is expected to be about one and a half years. This is also a key project of the Haizhuwan Tunnel Project." said Qiu Wei, deputy general manager of the Haizhuwan Tunnel Project of Guangzhou Communications Investment Group.

The project construction is difficult

The Haizhuwan Tunnel has a maximum depth of 50 meters into the ground. In addition, it needs to pass through the complex red bed geology of the Pearl River Delta region in a long distance, which requires higher equipment.

It is reported that the Haizhuwan Tunnel Project spans Haizhu District and Panyu District longitudinally. The total length of the line is 4.35 kilometers, of which the shield section is 2077 meters long. It underruns Lijiao Waterway of Pearl River, Luoxi Island and perfume Road of Sanzhi in the form of double tube single layer shield tunnel.

The project adopts the construction standard of urban expressway with two-way six-lane and design speed of 60 km/h. It is the first underwater tunnel constructed by Guangzhou with super-large shield technology and is known as the first shield in the industry.Editor/Ma Xue
