Earlier, the Cambodian government announced that it planned to upgrade two existing railways to high-speed railway. The two railway lines are Phnom Penh to Sihanouk and Phnom Penh to Bobe, the Cambodia-Thailand border.

Recently, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport of Cambodia said that the country planned to build Phnom Penh - Pobe railway line, which is expected to cost more than US $4 billion. After the completion of the construction, the line will become the country's first high-speed railway.

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport has authorized China Road and Bridge Engineering Co., Ltd. to carry out a feasibility study of the project, and the preliminary study results have been released. The Ministry of Public Works and Transport held a meeting with CRBC on January 23, 2023 to discuss and exchange views on the preliminary research results.

CRBC introduced the economic benefits, passenger and freight volume, technical standards and total project amount of the high-speed railway project.

Sun Zhantuo, Minister of Public Works and Transportation, held a meeting with CRBC

According to the preliminary research results, the total length of the high-speed railway is 382 kilometers, which will cost US $4 billion, including the purchase of high-speed trains. The project takes 4 years, and the design speed is 160 kilometers per hour. According to the short-term and long-term plans, the project will build 33 high-speed railway stations, including 19 high-speed railway stations in the short-term plan and 14 high-speed railway stations in the long-term plan.

Sun Zhantuo, Minister of Public Works and Transport, raised several questions after listening to the preliminary research results. Sun Zhantuo said that he would meet with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance and Economics Onben Monillo on January 30, 2023 to report the details of the project.

Sun Zhantuo said that Prime Minister Hun Sen instructed the Ministry of Public Works and Transport to work closely with the Ministry of Finance and Economics at the plenary meeting of the Cabinet on January 13, 2023, to accelerate the promotion of the high-speed rail plan and enable Cambodia to realize the high-speed rail dream as soon as possible.

China Road and Bridge Corporation carried out feasibility study on high-speed railway projects

It is reported that CRBC submitted an application on December 17, 2021 to carry out a feasibility study on the high-speed railway project and obtained the approval of the government on January 6, 2022.

Premier Hun Sen announced on January 14, 2023 that he would pay an official visit to China on February 10, 2023. He hoped that this visit would lead to more cooperation projects, including the hope that China would help Cambodia build high-speed railway.

The northern railway connects the capital Phnom Penh, Kanla, Kampong Chiang Yeung, Bodhisattva, Battambang and Putri Mianzhi provinces. Once upgraded into a high-speed railway, it will greatly facilitate mass transportation and greatly promote personnel and trade exchanges between Cambodia and Thailand.

It is worth mentioning that CRBC invested 2.019 billion US dollars to build Cambodia's first expressway from Phnom Penh to West Port, which was opened to traffic last October. CRBC will invest another US $1.638 billion to build the second expressway from Phnom Penh to Bayu. The project is expected to start construction in 2023.

Minister Sun Zhantuo said that the completion of Phnom Penh - Paku Expressway will drive the economic and social development of the three provinces along the line, including Kanla, Prey Veng and Svay Rieng, promote the flow of people and logistics between Cambodia and Vietnam, and improve the level of connectivity between the two countries. The project will be connected with the Mupai - Ho Chi Minh Expressway in Vietnam, which forms an important part of the Asian Highway Line 1.Editor/Ma Xue
