For some countries, the development of floating offshore wind power has become a necessary choice to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality. The ancients were amazed by the endless power of the sea and its power to defy everything! Can the unpredictable power of the sea be used by us? Recently, German renewable energy developer BayWa announced that it has applied for the development of a 600MW floating wind power project in Portugal, which is expected to become the world's first zero-subsidy floating wind power project.

The project is located in Viana do Castelo, Portugal, where BayWa hopes to deploy 30 units with a capacity of 20MW and a total capacity of 600MW.

The company stated that after the completion of the project, all power will be sold through signing a power purchase and sale agreement without any subsidies, thus becoming a "milestone of offshore wind power in Portugal and the world". According to the application submitted by the company, the project is scheduled to be completed in 2028.

Regarding the use of 20MW wind turbines, the company believes that the single-unit capacity of offshore wind turbines has maintained rapid iterations. At present, the maximum single-unit capacity is 16MW. By the project construction period, 20MW wind turbines can already be used.

Recently, Portugal is studying to build its coastal deepwater area into an important floating offshore wind power base in the world. It is expected to launch a bidding plan for floating projects with a scale of 10GW in 2023. This 600MW project is expected to be one of them.

A 960MW floating project developed by BayWa was awarded the tender in Scotland's first offshore wind tender, announced in January 2022. Editor/Xu Shengpeng
