EGP, a subsidiary of Italian energy company Enel Group, has signed 220 MW of power purchase agreements with South Africa's AirLiquide and Sasol. From 2025, EGP will supply renewable energy to Sasol's Secunda plant, where Air Liquide operates the world's largest oxygen production facility.
Clean energy will be provided by EGP's two wind farms in the Eastern Cape, with a combined capacity to generate more than 800GWh of clean energy per year. The PPA is the result of a joint request for proposals between Air Liquide and Sasol in April 2021, in which the parties agreed to purchase 900 MW of renewable energy.
Each of the two wind projects will be implemented through dedicated vehicles with local majority ownership. EGP operates in the region through its wholly-owned subsidiary Enel Green Power South Africa, which currently has more than 1.2GW of renewable energy capacity in South Africa.
These agreements are part of EGP's tailored renewable energy solutions for commercial and industrial clients to help them achieve their sustainability goals.
Manuele Battisti, Enel Green Power South Africa Country Manager, said: We are proud to partner with Sasol and Air Liquide on their sustainability journey. The deal will significantly contribute to the decarbonization of the Secunda plant, reducing CO2 emissions generated during oxygen production by 30% to 40% by 2031.
In addition to meeting sustainability goals, purchasing energy through independent power producers allows for better financial planning through tariff transparency and reduces ongoing operational risk associated with traditional energy cost fluctuations and growth based solely on the consumer price index. In November 2022, EGP's Chilean operations began construction on La Cabaña, a 105.6 MW wind farm with 34.3 MW of battery energy storage.Editor/XingWentao
