The Kwanza is the legal currency of Angola, a country in Southwest Africa. Its name is taken from the Kwanza River, the largest river in the territory and known as the mother river of Angola. The Kwanza River has a huge water system, numerous tributaries, and rich water resources. The name of the currency after the river reflects the importance that Angolans attach to water. Angola Kaikai Hydropower Project

Located in the middle section of the Kwanza River, the Angola Kaikai hydropower station project undertaken by China Gezhouba Group is the largest hydropower station constructed by a Chinese-funded enterprise in Angola and is known as the Three Gorges Project in Africa. The project is 230 kilometers away from the capital Luanda. It is the third level of the eight hydropower stations in the basin, including a main power station and an ecological power station. The main power station is composed of four 530MW units, and the ecological power station is composed of a 52MW unit. The capacity is 2172MW, the annual average power generation is 8566GW/h, the normal storage level of the reservoir is EL.630m, and the storage capacity is 436 million m3.

Angola's Kaikai hydropower station project officially entered the main construction stage in November 2022, and successfully signed a power transmission and transformation contract, and established a power transmission and transformation project branch. It is planned to realize the power generation of the first unit by the end of 2026; More than 50% of the country's power supply demand, power generation revenue will be used for infrastructure construction and natural resource development projects, turning resource advantages into economic advantages; after the formation of the reservoir area, it will also have peak regulation and flood control functions, which will greatly improve water resource utilization conditions and reduce annual Greenhouse gas emissions are about 7.2 million tons; during the peak construction period, more than 6,000 jobs will be directly provided, which will greatly improve the livelihood of the local society and promote local economic development.

Since the start of the project, the project department has extensively participated in local rural joint construction, education and training, medical services, disaster relief and rescue, road maintenance and other China-Angola exchanges and public welfare activities, and carries out Christmas, May 1st Labor Day and other holiday condolence activities every year to support the project. Employees, surrounding villagers and farm workers sent condolence materials.

Since 2018, the project department has provided clean drinking water to 3 villages (Yabebe Village, Yindongu Village, and Niyango Village) according to the needs of the surrounding villagers, and delivered it every other day.

The project has successively built irrigation ponds for nearby farms and Yabeibei Village, providing convenience for crop irrigation and livestock drinking water. A water intake well was built for Kissuba Village, 30 kilometers away from the project, and water intake and water storage equipment were installed. The one-time water storage capacity can reach 40m3, which solved the problem of drinking water and domestic water for more than 350 local villagers. After the outbreak of the new crown epidemic in the world, the employees of the project department spontaneously donated 15 million kwanzas to purchase and donate anti-epidemic materials and living materials for the province of Kwanza Norte.

The free clinic in Yabeibei Village near the project site measured blood pressure, checked blood, and diagnosed diseases for about 50 local villagers, and established a medical file for each villager. At the same time, the project department also sent them clean domestic water, bottled water, beverages and other daily necessities.

In 2022, the project department will cooperate with the Confucius Institute at the University of Neto in Angola to hold Sino-Angola youth cultural exchange activities to narrow the psychological distance between the youth of China and Angola; organize a series of sports events for Angolan employees to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Angolan first president Antonio, Enhance the sense of honor and belonging of Angola employees; join hands with FAW Jiefang Company and the Confucius Institute at Neito University to jointly organize young employees and representatives of teachers and students from China and Angola to visit the Iron Palace and Military Museum of Angola to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Angola, and deepen the relationship between young employees of China and Angola.
