Boom Power will advance the development of more than 1GW of solar + battery energy storage projects in the UK in 2023. The UK-based solar developer has acquired 237.5MWac of import and export grid connections at the Thorpe Marsh power station in Doncaster, including solar and BESS.

Based on its size, the project will be classified as a major national infrastructure project and will be assessed by the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero. Boom Power said battery storage allows the electricity network to release energy on demand during fluctuations for emergencies and grid balancing.

The 237.5MW of imported capacity enables the batteries to be charged during off-peak hours, with excess energy that would otherwise go to waste. It forms the company's second NSIP project following the 400MW East Yorkshire Solar Farm.

Boom Power founder Mark Hogan said a key part of the strategy to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 was the transition to an electricity system with 100% zero-carbon electricity generation, a significant portion of which came from renewable sources. I firmly believe that supporting ambitious action and bold commitments will drive electricity markets towards long-term energy independence through sustainable pathways.

Boom Power has also announced a project proposal for the Carrog battery energy storage system, which will be built on approximately 2.3 hectares near Cemaes in Anglesey. The proposed stand-alone battery facility is expected to be directly connected to the grid and have an energy storage capacity of around 660MWh.

Separately, Boom Power, which has received planning approval for a 49.9MWac solar project in Kenly, near Hull, East Yorkshire, did not comment after the judicial period. The company has five other renewable energy projects in the pipeline, totaling more than 100MWh of BESS and more than 150MW of solar.Editor/XingWentao
