Recently, Swedish developer Vattenfall announced that it will invest in the construction of a 2.6GW onshore wind farm in the Arctic Circle, which is expected to become the largest onshore wind farm in Europe after completion.
It is reported that the wind farm is called Storlandet, located near Gällivare in northern Sweden. At first, Vattenfall planned to build a wind farm of about 550MW here and install 120 4.5~5MW wind turbines; however, the final construction scale reached 2.6GW, which was expanded by 4 times, and the stand-alone capacity was also increased to about 7MW.
In this regard, Vattenfall said that larger-scale projects can help reduce costs.
Sweden is the country with the highest proportion of renewable energy in Europe, and currently the entire northern region has no fossil fuel power plants. According to Vattenfall, the northern region still needs more local renewable energy generation capacity to reduce losses from power transmission.
Vattenfall expects the project to be completed by 2030.Editor / He Yurong
