On March 10, 2023, the bidding announcement for the construction general contracting of the civil engineering bids 1 to 5 of the Shenzhen Pinghu-Yantian Port Railway Reconstruction Project was released. The total planned investment of the project is 7.533 billion yuan, and the construction period is 4 years.

The existing Pingyan Railway is located in the east of Shenzhen City, Guangdong Province. It is a single-track internal combustion railway with an operating speed of 30-50 km/h. It mainly undertakes the function of sea-rail combined transport container freight. Due to the limited passing capacity and low technical standards of the existing railway, this time, the double-track electrification transformation of the existing railway will be carried out.

The reconstructed line mainly runs along the existing Pingyan Railway Corridor, the urban area is changed to the form of a tunnel into the ground, and a second line is built along the existing line at both ends. After the transformation, the main line will be 19.742 kilometers long, and the branch line in Donggang District will be 4.256 kilometers long. Three stations will be set up on the whole line: Hunan, Zhonggang District, and Donggang District Stations. The design driving speed is 120 km/h, the limit slope is 15‰, and the traction is electric.

Through the reconstruction of Yantian Zhonggang District Station and the newly built Donggang District Station, the near-term and long-term sea-rail combined transport volumes of Yantian Port have reached 2.31 million TEU and 3.6 million TEU respectively, accounting for 20% of Yantian Port’s throughput, and the proportion of sea-rail combined transport has increased from the current 1.5%. Increase to 14%, 20%, reaching the international advanced level.

The first section of the Pingyan Railway Reconstruction Project has officially started construction at the end of December 2022. The first section is the Henggang Tunnel, the control project of the whole line, the three nodes of Anliang Inclined Shaft, Yantian Inclined Shaft, and Donggang District Branch Line Tunnel, with a total investment of about 2.81 billion.
