Recently, in Wuming District, Nanning City, the construction site of the China Southern Power Grid Nanning Pumped Storage Power Station, which is one of the 102 major projects of the 14th Five Year Plan and the first pumped storage power station project in Guangxi, has been busy. More than 1100 builders have intensified their work on 27 construction sites, aiming to accelerate the full production and power generation of the power station by 2025.

Nanning Pumped Storage Project

In 2023, the construction of Nanning pumped storage project has been comprehensively accelerated, and the construction scale has reached its largest since the start of construction. Currently, Southern Power Grid Energy Storage Co., Ltd. is accelerating the construction of a 10 million kilowatt level pumped storage base in Guangxi, comprehensively promoting the development and construction of 8 pumped storage power stations.

Entering the gravity drainage tunnel of Nanning pumped storage power station, a 52 meter long and 220 ton mechanical giant dragon is undergoing excavation operations in the tunnel. This is one of the most advanced tunnel construction equipment in the world - full face hard rock tunnel boring machine (TBM), which can cut tunnel sections with a diameter of 2.5 meters to 10 meters at a time. Under the same conditions, the excavation speed is 4 times that of the traditional drilling and blasting method, with a monthly excavation of 350 meters to 500 meters.

It is reported that Nanning pumped storage power station has achieved the first successful application of TBM in the pumped storage field in South China. According to the current progress, the 4902 meter long gravity drainage tunnel is expected to be fully completed by the end of the year.

In the access tunnel of the power station, drilling construction is progressing in an orderly manner towards the main power house of the power station. The maximum vertical burial depth of the main factory building is 360 meters, with an area equivalent to three standard swimming pools and a height equivalent to 20 floors. Currently, the excavation progress has exceeded a quarter. At the same time, the reservoir on the power station located at the top of the mountain is taking shape, and 20 excavators are cleaning the ground at the bottom of the reservoir to make the final "closing" cleaning for the excavation of the reservoir.

It is reported that 2023 is the year for Nanwang Energy Storage Company to comprehensively accelerate the development of Guangxi pumped storage projects. In addition to Nanning pumped storage power station, the preliminary development work of 7 pumped storage power stations, including Guilin Guanyang, Guigang North, Liuzhou Luzhai, Qinzhou Lingshan, Yulin Fumian, Fangchenggang Shangsi, and Nanning Wuming, is also accelerating.
