Energy storage service provider Fluence Energy has completed a 570 MW energy storage portfolio in the Philippines. The battery-based energy storage portfolio has been offered to SMC Global Power, a subsidiary of Philippines-based conglomerate San Miguel Corporation.
The completion of the combination was announced at the opening of SMCGP's 1GW/1GWh battery storage fleet in the country. The 570MW energy storage portfolio is part of a larger 1GW/1GWh portfolio. The 1GW portfolio, installed at 32 sites in the Philippines, is expected to provide advanced grid stability as more intermittent renewable energy projects are added to the grid. Energy storage projects provide critical grid stability, including frequency response, reserve power and voltage regulation, to the country's entire national transmission network.
This is in line with the Philippines’ goal of reaching 35% renewable energy generation by 2030 and 50% by 2040. The 570MW portfolio is spread across 18 sites. The projects were deployed by Fluence and SMCGP, and their deployment is considered an important milestone in the Philippines' transition to clean energy.
Don H. Lee, general manager of Fluence Southeast Asia and East Asia and vice president of Asia Pacific Services, said that the completion of the SMCGP energy storage system fleet is an important milestone for SMCGP and Fluence in the ASEAN region. Our relationship with SMCGP began in 2018 when they began exploring energy storage and realizing its visionary potential in the Philippines.
The Masinloc energy storage project is the first in the Philippines and one of the first grid-scale projects in Southeast Asia to enter commercial operation. Since delivering this project, we have successfully passed the grid compliance tests of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines in Kabankalan, Malita, Maco, San Manuel, Concepcion, Jasaan, Villanueva, Gamu and Maapit, just to name a few.Editor/XingWentao
