China's water conservancy and hydropower technology is world-leading and has gradually become an important field of overseas projects along the Belt and Road. On April 25, 2023 local time, President Emomali Rahmon of Tajikistan attended the power generation and completion of the last technical upgrading unit (Unit 1) of the Gravnaya Hydropower Station technical renovation project undertaken by China Power Construction Acceptance ceremony.

This is his second visit to the project site after he attended the project commencement ceremony. Dale Zhumayev, Minister of Energy of Tajikistan, Ismoyle Zoda, Chairman of the State Power Corporation, Shanny Campbell, Chief Representative of Central Asia of the Asian Development Bank, Wang Zhi, Country Representative of PowerChina in Tajikistan, Hydropower Ten Wang Huai, deputy general manager of the Sixth Bureau International Company and general manager of the Central Asia Regional Department, and Yang Mingxi, deputy general manager of the Chengdu International Engineering Branch and general manager of the Eurasian Regional Department, attended the ceremony.

At the ceremony, Rahmon expressed his congratulations on the successful completion of the project, expressed his gratitude to PowerChina for its hard work, and praised PowerChina as a world-class enterprise that honors its promises and abides by contracts. He pointed out that this project will provide a source of power for the development of Tajikistan's national economy after a comprehensive transformation, and is of positive significance to the realization of Tajikistan's energy independence strategy. Subsequently, Rahmon, Campbell, and Wang Huai jointly pressed the power generation button of Unit 1, announcing the official completion of the project.

The Gravnaya Hydropower Station was built in the former Soviet Union. Due to the operation time of nearly 60 years, the operation is extremely unstable. The unit, main transformer, tailrace, irrigation canal, metal structure, etc. are in urgent need of technical transformation. The 16th Hydropower Bureau of Power China and the Chengdu Institute formed a joint venture, and successfully won the bid for the project in October 2016 by virtue of its strong technical strength and excellent market reputation.

In the process of technical transformation and power generation that lasted more than 6 years, Power China fully considered the local actual situation and electricity demand, adopted internationally advanced Chinese-made unit equipment, excavated equipment and flow channel potential, and integrated abundant electromechanical equipment technology The transformation experience was applied to it, and at the same time, it overcame many difficulties such as the new crown epidemic, the suspension of China-Tajikistan routes, and the closure of land transport ports. Solved the power shortage problem in southern Tajikistan and even the whole country.

During the construction of the project, PowerChina not only trained a large number of engineering and technical talents for Tajikistan, more than 150 local employees participated in the project construction, but also actively fulfilled its social responsibilities, donated to the Ministry of Education of Tajikistan to build 3 schools, and carried out Activities such as poverty alleviation, emergency rescue and disaster relief, donations for epidemic prevention, etc.Editor/Ma Xue
