Siem Reap is located about 311 kilometers north of Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, and is home to Angkor Wat, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. With the rapid urban development and population increase in Siem Reap, the demand for safe drinking water in Siem Reap is increasing. In order to alleviate the tense situation of water supply in the city, the Siem Reap Water Supply Bureau obtained a loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency through the Ministry of Finance of Cambodia, and used it for the construction of the water supply expansion project in Siem Reap. Through international public bidding, SUMEC successfully won the bid and undertook the construction of the first tender section of the project, which made the Siem Reap Water Supply Expansion Project the first government project in Cambodia that was undertaken by a Chinese state-owned enterprise under preferential loans from the Japan International Cooperation Agency.

This project is Cambodia's first Japanese JICA preferential loan government project undertaken by a Chinese company. Since the start of construction in early 2020, SUMEC has overcome the adverse effects of the COVID-19 epidemic and cooperated with all parties. It took three years of construction and delivered high-quality and high-standard deliveries to the owner and the Cambodian people on schedule.

After the project is put into use, it will provide reliable, safe and high-quality drinking water for residents and international tourists of this world-renowned tourist city, improve the urban sanitation environment, promote economic development, and make important contributions to the sustainable development of the local community.
