Recently, the Ningxia Hunan ± 800 kV ultra-high voltage direct current transmission project has been officially approved by the National Development and Reform Commission. This means that the major project of the cross provincial and cross regional transmission channel, which has been included in the National 14th Five Year Plan for Energy Development and Electric Power Development, is about to officially start construction, opening a new chapter in the construction of the new power system in Ningxia.

Ningdian Hunan Project

According to reports, Ningxia Power Grid is located in the northeast of the Northwest Power Grid, and is an important component of the West East Power Transmission North Channel. It is a typical small province, strong power grid, and large power transmission terminal. We have successively built ± 660 kV DC lines to transmit electricity to the Shandong power grid, and ± 800 kV DC lines to transmit electricity to the Zhejiang power grid. The DC power transmission capacity has reached 14 million kilowatts, and the utilization rate of transmission channels ranks among the top in the country. As of now, Ningxia has accumulated over 610 billion kilowatt hours of external power transmission.

Rich experience in operation and management of external transmission channels has created favorable conditions for the development and operation of subsequent channels such as the Ningxiang DC project. According to relevant planning, the Ningxiang DC project route passes through 6 provinces (districts, cities) in Ningxia, Gansu, Shaanxi, Chongqing, Hubei, and Hunan, with a transmission distance of approximately 1619 kilometers, including approximately 242 kilometers in the Ningxia section. The transmission capacity is 8 million kilowatts, and a new converter station will be built in Shapotou District, Zhongwei City. The project is accompanied by 4.64 million kilowatts of thermal power and 13 million kilowatts of new energy. The relevant person in charge of the Development and Reform Commission of the Autonomous Region stated that it only took 5 months from the official approval of the supporting power supply plan to the completion of the preparation, review, and closure of the feasibility study report. The static investment of this project is 27.482 billion yuan, making it the first export channel in China to mainly transmit electricity from new energy bases in deserts, Gobi, and deserts. The proportion of new energy export electricity exceeds 50%. After completion and operation, the annual generation of clean energy electricity is about 22 billion kilowatt hours, which is estimated to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 18.46 million tons based on alternative coal-fired power units.

The smooth launch and implementation of the Ningxiang DC project is an important measure to implement the new national energy security strategy, promote green energy transformation, and achieve the dual carbon goal. It helps to promote the high-level construction of the national new energy comprehensive demonstration zone in Ningxia, promote the transformation of Ningxia's clean energy resource advantages into economic advantages, and better play the role of the West to East power transmission network hub, which is mutually accessible, multi energy complementary, and regional economic, both inside and outside Ningxia, It is of great significance to enhance the power security guarantee capacity of Hunan Province. The relevant person in charge of the Autonomous Region Development and Reform Commission stated that the next step will be to actively promote the construction of power grid projects, accelerate the construction of supporting coal-fired and new energy projects, and synchronously promote the construction of supporting power grid projects, in accordance with the deployment of the Autonomous Region Party Committee and government. This will ensure that the construction and production of supporting power supply projects, power grid projects, and DC projects are synchronized.

It is reported that after the operation of the Ningdian Hunan project in 2025, the annual electricity transmission to Hunan will be between 36 billion and 40 billion kilowatt hours. The internal and external electricity supply in Ningxia will reach two hundred billion, namely, the sold electricity in the area will reach 100 billion kilowatt hours, and the external electricity will reach 100 billion kilowatt hours; The development of renewable energy has achieved two 50% goals, namely 50% of installed capacity and 50% of total social electricity consumption.
