The Belt and Road Project: Laos Huairane River Hydropower Station
Recently, all units of the Laos Huairane River Hydropower Station, designed and constructed by China Power Construction Corporation, were put into operation twice a day in three days, marking the project's early achievement of power generation goals. As another important achievement of China Laos electricity cooperation, this project is an important manifestation of strengthening economic cooperation between the two countries. It is of great significance for building Laos into a Southeast Asian battery, improving the living standards of local people, and developing the economy of remote areas in southeastern Laos.
Project Overview
The Huairane River Hydropower Station in Laos is located in the Sekong Province of southeastern Laos, and is surveyed and designed by the Chengdu Institute of China Electric Power Construction Corporation and EPC contracted by the 10th Bureau of Hydropower. The installed capacity of the power station is 60 megawatts, with an annual power generation of approximately 290 million kilowatt hours.

The power station uses the auxiliary dam to introduce the Banno River water into the main dam reservoir area through a water supply tunnel. The main dam retains water and introduces it into the power plant for power generation through a pressurized diversion tunnel, surge shaft, and pressure pipeline. The main dam is built on a high mountain canyon at an altitude of 1154 meters, and is currently the highest barrage for hydropower projects in Laos, with a maximum dam height of 59 meters. The electricity generated is integrated into the Vietnam National Grid after passing through the South Yimu Power Station switchyard in Laos, helping Laos transform from an electricity importing country to an electricity exporting country.

As another important achievement of power cooperation between China and Laos, this project is an important manifestation of strengthening economic cooperation between the two countries. It plays an important supporting role in building the "Southeast Asian Battery" in Laos, improving the living standards of local people, and developing the economy of remote areas in southeastern Laos.
China Power entered the Lao market in 1996 and, after more than 20 years of development and growth, has grown into one of the most influential engineering contractors and power investors in Laos. More than 150 projects have been completed or under construction in Laos, and a large number of major projects with international influence, such as the cascade hydropower stations on the South European River and the China Laos Railway, have been invested and constructed, which has strongly promoted the economic and social development of Laos and made positive contributions to promoting China Laos economic and trade cooperation.Editor/Ma Xue
