On June 15, 2023, the development of China's first domestically produced 300 MW and 400 MW variable speed pumped storage units has officially entered a new stage of engineering application.
The variable speed pumped storage unit can change the rotor speed and flexibly adjust the power, allowing fluctuating new energy sources such as wind and photovoltaic to be more stably connected to the power grid. With the increasing proportion of Chinoiserie PV installed in the power system, the development of variable-speed pumped storage units has been accelerated synchronously.
In November and December 2022, the localization of complete sets of 300 MW variable speed pumped storage units will rely on Zhaoqing Langjiang Pumped-storage hydroelectricity and Huizhou Zhongdong Pumped-storage hydroelectricity, China's first super large capacity variable speed pumped storage project. The two variable-speed pumped storage units purchased and manufactured this time will be installed in the above two Pumped-storage hydroelectricity respectively, and are expected to be delivered before the end of December 2025.
It is reported that the main works of Zhaoqing Langjiang and Huizhou Zhongdong Pumped-storage hydroelectricity are accelerating construction, and the manufacturing of equivalent rotor models of variable speed units and the first round of tests have been completed, laying a solid foundation for the smooth engineering application of large variable speed pumped storage units in China.
