Pumped storage is an important way for countries around the world to ensure the safe and stable operation of their power systems. From June 17 to 18, 2023, the pre feasibility study report of Zhanhe Pumped-storage hydroelectricity in Yingshan County, Hubei Province was reviewed by China International Engineering Consulting Co., Ltd.

Zhanhe Pumped-storage hydroelectricity is located in Taojiahe Township, Yingshan County, Hubei Province. The upper reservoir is located on the right bank branch of Guojia River, a tributary of the East River, and the lower reservoir is located on the Guojia River, a tributary of the East River. It is about 4.5km away from the dam site of Zhanhe Reservoir, and 160km, 120km and 62km away from Wuhan City, Huanggang and Yingshan County. It is close to the load center and has a good geographical location.

Zhanhe Pumped-storage hydroelectricity has a preliminary installed capacity of 1200MW, and four single-stage mixed flow reversible pump turbine units with a unit capacity of 300MW are installed. The main buildings of the hub project are composed of an upper reservoir, a lower reservoir, a water conveyance system, an underground powerhouse, and a ground switch station. The initial planned normal storage level of the upper reservoir is 691m, and the normal storage level of the lower reservoir is 400m. The initial rated head is 284m, and the distance to height ratio is about 7.38. After completion, it will supply power to the Hubei power grid and undertake tasks such as peak shaving, valley filling, frequency modulation, phase modulation, energy storage, and emergency backup.

Pumped storage energy is an important green, low-carbon, clean, and flexible regulating power source in the power system. Since the release and implementation of the "Medium and Long Term Development Plan for Pumped Storage Energy (2021-2035)", significant achievements have been made in the planning and construction. In order to further promote the high-quality development of pumped storage energy, in April 2023, the National Energy Administration guided provinces to carry out orderly new project compliance work based on in-depth research and demonstration of pumped storage development needs. For areas with demand gaps, new project compliance work can be proposed. For areas without demand gaps, project adjustments can be proposed according to the principles of "defining the total amount, improving quality, selecting the best from the best, having input and output, and dynamic adjustment".
